HERBAL MEDICINE---SOURCING & EVALUATING HERBAL LITERATURE (Garden Room)

Credit Hours: 4 MLA Continuing Education Hours Pending

Because of the increasing interest and use of complementary therapies in medicine today, librarians are asked over and over again to find information on herbs and herbal therapies. This course will cover a brief history of the use of herbs as therapeutic agents and a look at the more commonly used herbal therapies today. Mr. Snow will outline basic guidelines for finding and evaluating herbal literature as well as providing librarians with reliable sources of information as reference for patients and clinicians.

James Snow is an herbal therapist as well as a teacher of materia medica and human physiology at the California School of Herbal Studies. Mr. Snow graduated from the California School of Herbal Studies where he studied under the tutelage of clinically trained herbalists, Amanda McQuade-Crawford and David Hoffman. For the last two years, Mr. Snow has been the director of the school's advanced clinical program. He is also a visiting faculty member at the Rocky Mountain School of Botanical Medicine in Colorado and the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine in New York.

 

CREATING EFFECTIVE PRESENTATIONS USING MICROSOFT POWERPOINT (San Jose State University, North Walquist Library 6th floor computer lab)

Presentation graphics often help to communicate information more effectively than just the spoken word. They illustrate concepts that are difficult to articulate, provide focus for visual learners, and add animation to an otherwise static presentation. This introductory class will cover the following: Some of the principles of effective electronic presentation, design, layout and their practical applications. Attendees will learn how to create a slide show during the class by using the basics of using Microsoft PowerPoint®. Specific topics include slide creation/editing, presentation options, and basic animation, graphics, and data. Attendees are required to have basic computing skills but are not required to have previous experience with PowerPoint.

 

NURSING INFORMATION ACCESS (Empire Room)

Credit Hours: 8 MLA Continuing Education Hours

Time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Nursing Information Access covers unique aspects of nursing and its knowledge-based information resources that impact information services for the nursing profession. It reviews the development of nursing and its literature, assessment of nursing information needs, nursing information resources in all formats, and the planning and evaluation of library services for nurses and the multidisciplinary health care team. The course features database searching for questions related to nursing and multidisciplinary patient care, including allied health and patient education resources. It will also feature nursing resources for evidenced based health care.

Peg Allen has 30 years experience as a health sciences librarian, working with nursing and allied health clientele in a variety of academic and clinical settings. She has worked for all three of the major database vendors for nursing (CINAHL, INI/MEDLINE, AND Rndex) and currently serves as a consultant for Cinahl Information Systems and Northwoods HealthNet, an NLM funded Information Systems Project. She is a Distinguished member of MLA's Academy of Health Information professionals, and Research Committee Chair for Nursing & Allied Health Resources Section.
